1750s Poems: 1752 Poems, 1753 Poems, the Hilliad, the Hop-Garden, Po me Sur le D sastre de Lisbonne, 1753 in Poetry, 1752 in Poetry $14.13 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Poème sur le désastre de Lisbonne (Poem on the Lisbon Disaster ) was a poem in French composed by Voltaire , regarding the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It is widely regarded as an introduction to Voltaire’s later acclaimed work Candide . The 180-line poem was composed in December, 1755; it was published in 1756 (see 1756 in poetry). Background The earthquake on November 1, 1755 had completely devastated Lisbon , the capital of Portugal . The city was reduced to ruins, and between 10,000 to 60,000 people were killed. Being one of the most destructive earthquakes in history, the event had a major effect on the cultural consciousness of much of Europe. Voltaire was one of many philosophers, theologians and intellectuals to be deeply affected by the disaster. Catholics attempted to explain the disaster as God’s wrath, invited by the sinfulness of the people of Portugal and the presence of some Protestants and Jesuits; Protestants blamed the Portuguese for being Catholic, thus being punished by God. Voltaire’s philosophical pessimism was affirmed by the great earthquake which provided incontrovertible proof that optimistic attitudes and the notion of “for the greater good” were false. Voltaire was convinced that there existed no benign and concerned deity that would guide the virtuous and punish the sinful. Voltaire asserted that accident played a major part in life, that people were basically weak, helpless, ignorant of their destiny. They might well hope for a happier state, but that was the logical limit of their optimism. Theme and interpretation Voltaire is deeply moved by the humanitarian crisis created by the earthquake, and questions if a just and compassionate God would seek to punish sins through such terrible means. Voltaire argues that the all-powerful God |

1960s In Fashion $53.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1960s featured a number of diverse trends. It was a decade that broke many fashion traditions, mirroring social movements during the period. In the middle of the decade, culottes, box-shaped PVC dresses and go-go boots were in style. The widely popular bikini came into fashion in 1963 after being featured in the musical Beach Party. Mary Quant invented the mini-skirt, and Jackie Kennedy produced the French manicure with false eyelashes, and the pillbox hat, which became extremely popular throughout the 1960s. Blues, greens, and shimmery eye shadows were popular; false eyelashes were used, and hairstyles were a variety of lengths and styles. While focusing on colours and tones, accessories were less of an importance during the sixties. People were dressing in psychedelic prints, highlighter colours, and mismatched patterns. The hippie movement late in the decade also exerted a strong influence on ladies’ clothing styles, including bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye, and batik fabrics, as well as paisley prints. |

A Subtle Smile $10.3 About “A Subtle Smile”It is a collection of six diverse stories that will draw the readers to enjoy the amazing happenings that walked around from the old past to the present age. The first story “THE BALLERINA” revolves around a beautiful Egyptian belly dancer of early nineteenth century and her romance with a sailor turned pirate. Rival suitors of the time took them to a fatal end but both lovers survived spiritually to regain their existence after one hundred years in the mid of the twentieth century during the time of world war II when the pirate reincarnated in the shape of a French Naval Commander and discovered his beloved ballerina on the shores of the Mediterranean sea.The second story “MUMMY OF THE PERSIAN PRINCESS” is based on the discovery of a true portrayal of a Persian mummy of a 500 B.C. era and its history of origin. In its pursuit the story jumps to an international company engaged in the trade of fake antiques and how its activities were hampered by Judie Croft a Harvard University intern who specialized in drawing standards for antique evaluations. The story is woven in a romantic companionship of Judie with a Harvard professor both of them rendezvoused a lot in Paris, Rome and New York in the pursuit of elimination of fake trade of antiques at the risk of their lives. The third story “TERRORIST No. 1″ is the tale of false identity that killed the innocents. Inspired by a news item published by Christopher Cooper in the Wall Street Journal in 2002 the story tells about the killing of five undocumented travelers on Macedonian-Bulgarian border and denounced as hardened terrorists. The fourth story “PIYARI AMMAN” dwells on the life of a young widow of 15 years age who survived for more than eighty years in the family of her late husband in the princely state of Jaipur now known as historical pink city of India. The story also narrates some interesting episodes of the royal family of the Maharaja of Jaipur, its world |

Americans In Europe $21.63 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:in. THE AMERICAN DENTIST. The first American in Paris one would naturally suppose to be the Minister Plenipotentiary. But this is not so. The first American in Paris is a dentist. I know very well that this statement will be received in the American quarter —and especially in the American Church, Avenue de 1′Alma—with scorn and derision. I shall not pause, however, just now to argue the question, but if you will take the trouble to stop the first Frenchman you meet in the ” Champs filysees ” and ask him who is the most distinguished American in Paris, or in Europe, he, I am quite sure, will give you the name of this dentist. And he deserves his great eminence, for he, like the very rich lady, is a true type, if not the best type, of a genuine American. First of all he is a self-made and a well-made man, if the making of a great fortune counts for anything ; and do we not all know that it counts for everything ? This gentleman was born in a little village in the State of Pennsylvania. His father, I believe, was a poor farmer and the boy had no schooling to speak of. I do not know the particulars of his early life, nor how he got a start in his profession. By some means, however, he made his way to Philadelphia and managed to get employment there with a dentist. Soon after his arrival in the City of Brotherly Love he sent to some sort of exhibition a set of handsome artificial teeth. These false teeth caught the artistic eye of a distinguished American dentist who lived in Paris. This gentleman made inquiries, found the young dental artist, and carried him off to Paris as his assistant. Now this American dentist had no less a personage than the Emperor of All the French among his clients. The dentist had, I am sorry to say, his failings—as who of us has not? |
